Double Edged is a sword-fighting game from Nitrome, the studio behind a long run of pixel-art browser games. The catalogue lists it as a 2012 release. You play a swordsman dropped into a cracked, desert-coloured arena, and the whole game is about duelling: close the distance, trade blows and stay standing longer than the other side.

It has a Play, Credits and Help screen and nothing more. There are no menus of unlockables to wade through, so a session is short. You load the page, click Play and you are fighting within seconds. That suits a quick break between longer matches.

It also suits someone who came for Super Smash Flash 2. Both games are about reading an opponent's movement and punishing a mistake. Double Edged is much smaller in scope. It is a much smaller game with no character roster to learn.

How to play

In single-player you face enemies as they arrive. A round is a series of short sword exchanges, and the task is to survive the current group before the next one shows up. In two-player mode you fight each other instead.

Tips

1. Read the Help screen before your first fight so you know which key does what. Guessing costs you the first few rounds.
2. Play the opening fights slowly. In a sword duel the timing of your swings matters more than how often you press the button.
3. In two-player mode, agree on which side of the keyboard each person uses first, so your hands do not collide.
4. If the game freezes, reload the page. It restarts cleanly.
